An Story of Surprising Kindness: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Ground
During 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured I would book accommodation upon arrival, however when I arrived, a big convention was happening and all the budget hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.
Coming from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could just sleep at the terminal – only to discover that airport, unlike Singapore’s, is not open all night. With no idea how to proceed and growing worried, I caught a city-bound bus and began walking in the direction of a gaming venue, believing I might spend those hours in a place operating through the night. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for acing an interview the next morning, but as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.
The world needs more folks with such compassion.
I must have looked confused since a young woman spotted me walking aimlessly through the city and wondered whether I needed help. I shared the story of my accommodation crisis and without hesitation she offered I could sleep on a spare mattress in her student dorm at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my medical school interview was the following day. She went further by offering a meal: one sandwiches she brought back her evening job. I was able to use the bathroom and a secure location and safe to sleep.
In retrospect, it’s clear to me what a big chance she accepted being a woman allowing a male stranger who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. Back then I was in my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to the potential danger. Today, as a parent, it astounds me she did that – yet incredibly thankful.
I never did attending the Australian National University, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten that incredible gesture of kindness. My sincere desire is that karma has repaid her generosity tenfold. The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.
