Both Deceased Students Named in Brown University Shooting as Police Press On With Hunt for Gunman.

The pair of scholars who died in the recent violent attack in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their killer carried on following the freeing by local law enforcement of the single suspect questioned in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a ceremony on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s branch of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. The White House press secretary also shared condolences publicly, saying in part: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her kin and peers, especially her parents.”

The Second Victim

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the renowned school, according to relatives.

His name was verified by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. His ambitions were lofty of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a tribute.

What Happened

Nine other people were hurt in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s university in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-old male arrested in a search at a hotel about 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“There is a killer at large,” said the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Investigations can lead one way, and then you have to regroup and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last approximately one day.”

Public Fear

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our community”.

The gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the engineering building on over the weekend, shooting over four dozen bullets from a handgun, a law enforcement official informed the news agency.

Police that raided the inn recovered a pair of pistols and magazines when the person of interest was arrested, according to reports.

The Wounded Victims

Among those wounded, one student was discharged from care, said Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in serious yet stable state, and another was critically ill, officials reported on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private K-12 school in the city of Durham, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

More Condolences

Cook was honored at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only here growing up... but at Brown University she was a radiant presence in that specific location as well.”

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the club. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she aided her club and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by Umurzokov’s death in a message. “Our profound condolences go out to the Umurzokov family, friends, and schoolmates and grieve for of his bright future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest college with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, took place amid one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings reported in the US so far in the current year, according to statistics.
