Emerging Trump Doctrine Points to The Continent's Fundamental Problem: An Alleged Shortfall of Xenophobia?

From Burden-Sharing to Cultural Anxiety
While Trump's earlier complaint centered on Europe's alleged failure to fund its own defense, his vision has now embraced a far more alarming perspective.
Colored by racism and a staggering contempt for Europe's governing bodies and elected leaders, he has issued warnings about the risk of civilizational erosion on a continent he barely knows and mostly seen from a distance.

According to this logic, migration from the global south causes a cultural dilution of European countries, making them "weak" under "foolish" leadership and setting the stage for their demise. This is an openly xenophobic ideology, with the president's allies explicitly endorsing far-right political parties across Europe.
While the broader theme of this race-baiting is familiar, its specific implications for European security are essential to grasp.
For Trump and his adherents—including tech magnate Elon Musk, who has called for the dissolution of the European Union—all politics is inherently transactional. However, while the previous argument was about financial fairness, the current assertion is that a decadent Europe is undeserving because of its embrace of multiculturalism.
A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
During the conversation, Trump himself connects these dots in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He concedes that Russia's Vladimir Putin wants a weak Europe. Trump then declares Europe is weak, and in exposing the rifts in the transatlantic alliance, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European unity—all while denying any responsibility.
This dynamic is unfolding at perhaps the most critical moment for Europe since WWII, with a brutal conflict in Ukraine and escalating provocations elsewhere on the continent.
As European nations cleaves ever tighter to Kyiv facing continuing warnings of American abandonment, the danger is that Trump has constructed a justifying narrative for ignoring European leaders.
The European Response
These developments demands a robust response from capitals across Europe. Although certain leaders, such as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, have been blunt in their rebuttals, including British officials—have continued with a strategy of seeking to placate the White House.
Recently, a Downing Street spokesperson refused to push back on Trump's comments about Europe or his latest criticism on the mayor of London.
The spokesperson stated, "He has a productive partnership with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the London mayor, and is focused on working with both to achieve better outcomes for the people."
The stark reality is that Trump means his words and repeats what he means repeatedly. The time has come to stop pretending otherwise.
