The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
