Sir Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not seeking a re-entry into football management, pointing out that it would be tough to duplicate the higher calling he felt as the national team coach.

Southgate indicated his aim to channel his attention toward engaging the youth and countering what he labeled a widespread pessimistic outlook currently prevalent in the country.

Pursuing Different Paths Beyond Coaching

In a recent radio interview, the manager was questioned on rumors linking him with open coaching positions in the English football and elsewhere.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Positive Examples

Leading up to the release of his forthcoming publication, Dear England: Lessons in Leadership, he emphasized that he is highly enthusiastic about offering guidance for young people, drawing on insights from his time as England’s men’s football manager from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

Southgate believes that his time managing the squad, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to greatly admired, holds general lessons.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he noted. “People saw us as high-ego players but we were able to turn that around. I saw the power that the team had to bring people together of every community.”

Parenting and Shaping the Next Generation

Speaking from his experience as a father, he commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Unity Over Division

Southgate asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the cultural focus often centers on disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he commented. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

The manager’s new release, titled Dear England, is set to present deeper reflections on leadership and public spirit drawn from his distinguished professional journey.
