Israeli citizens commemorate second anniversary of 7 October attacks as Gaza ceasefire talks proceed
Israelis have come together around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in Gaza.
The attack resulted in over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel answered by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.
"The aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a threat to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised on Israeli television channels.
Some time earlier, a minute's silence was respected throughout the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of indirect talks to review the provisions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations said that an evening round of mediated discussions started at evening in Egypt.
The representative explained the day's discussions finished without significant progress, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the opening period of the agreement.
He added that the talks are "tough and have still not deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that mediators are striving to reduce the disparities between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- A permanent ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- Post-war governance of the territory
Public Reaction
In the city's memorial area previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location feels like home now and until each abducted person return none of us will be secure."
"When we see everybody home once more, we can breathe again. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.
Near the prime minister's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to show their backing for the families of the captives. Israel states 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be alive.
Demonstrator a participant stated: "We must do any agreement needed for the captives to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that about seventy percent of the population prefer the conflict to finish in exchange for the release of the hostages.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the location of the gathering, mourners came together to pay their respects.
From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli attacks persisted.
In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk comes, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike earlier, shared.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my smallest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."
"Every second we check the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Medical Emergency
The healthcare center in Gaza City said it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the midday, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis reported another two fatalities had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get aid to the south, medical staff said.
