The Dominik Diamond Unofficial Game of the Year Roundup for This Year
Alright, how was this year in your household? Did it seem all as good as one might claim on social media? Overflowing with academic success for the children and elaborate dress-up celebrations for the adults? Or perhaps it was a swamp of letdowns with only occasional fun moments? Could any part be genuine, or are we all digitally altered AI slop beings with celebrity smiles?
I've assembled my thoughts together, ready or not, to debate the most important thing in twelve months: what titles we were obsessed with the most. Without further ado:
Release Eldest Daughter Played the Most
Pikmin
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate decent healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In reality."
Release Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I refuse to play games on my phone." He seemed insulted that the question was posed. Point taken.
Release Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into acting, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her avatar has a blooming utopia with far better healthcare than her older sibling has in real life.
Release the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Game I Found Amusing That My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Any time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to prepare him so he can mature and play games for mature audiences. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Skilled Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is incredible. Even better than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted deck building wizard’s poker, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you wake up one day and see it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So love turned to hate halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a classic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my demons so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Thoughtful Edition)
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just didn’t have the time or headspace to give it what it required earlier this year. With family visits over the festive period, I plan to dive into this in the late night after appropriate hospitality.
Game That Kept Me Sane When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was last year's surprise hit, but I was late to it. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. Its gameplay loop is a wonderful concept, but the effects behind the different joker cards are so imaginative it has become a game I literally would play constantly. Throw in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an true peak of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Game I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a wave of criticism when I critiqued how a glitch in another game soured the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I valued even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I mention that verbatim, because I appreciate the effort, and he is obviously an sharp judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult non-linear thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "look around". How delightful. I understand that it has great art and is perfection if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my adulthood. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Close call between business deals that caused concern, and expensive game releases. Both difficult to justify and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Crazy Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names called from the garden at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. No joke. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or doomscrolling, but it burns like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the 90s.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the end of days.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
