The Showrunner Reveals He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... At the Moment.
Vince Gilligan never anticipated that his new science-fiction series would become a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the hit series reaching its finale—and Season 2 officially in the works—Gilligan and his team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it anecdotally, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Despite trying to stay away, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“We prefer to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Central Mystery: Does Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff are not listening by audience theories, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We have some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “but we are always ready to discard a solid concept for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
