While Beachgoers Escaped Danger, Widely-Shared Photo Shows Lifeguard Running ‘All Out’ To the Location.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, has always considered the famous beach as her back yard. On a recent Sunday evening, she, like many neighbors, detected cracking sounds reverberating across the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I reasoned it was daylight and there was nothing visible,” she explains. She left her residence, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks they wore signaled trouble had occurred.

While standing on the street, talking to a duo who had hurried up the incline soaked, she noticed someone moving up from behind. The person was a rescuer, dashing towards Bondi barefoot from the neighbouring Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a medical device.

“I heard someone say ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this streak in blue,” she recounts. “He was zooming past. He was the only one heading in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, carrying that big kit and without footwear … He moved at something that undoubtedly every fibre in your being would instruct you to go in the reverse way.

“Just no hesitation, but just fully maximum effort running.”

A Symbol of Courage In the Wake of Tragedy

The image Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as one of many instances of valour in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, known as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to back up the other members at Bondi, as well as to work with surf lifesavers, officers and medical teams attending to many the injured.

Collective Outpouring and Solidarity

Doolan’s account was just one of many to come out of the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse next to the site of the incident serving as a makeshift hospital. It was shared that other team members were also seen responding bravely, including entering the water to save people in distress.

After the events, messages of support were shared. An online statement shared gratitude for the lifeguards who exhibited that “kindness will always triumph over darkness”.

The group of rescuers issued a communication, saying they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive sentiments and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the kindness for our responders,” the group commented. “In time, we will share our stories in the aim that it aids those involved.”

Local Government Praise

Waverley council, the governing body that oversees many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the moment the violence began right into late that evening.

“We have heard so many emotional narratives, but the viral picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help preserve life is extraordinary,” stated a council representative.

“The team show altruism every day in ensuring our world-famous coastlines safe for visitors, but what we saw on that evening should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and grapple with the terror of this violent and horrific tragedy, I think it is important that we consider just how much light we have observed in the midst of such darkness.”
