Young Australian Faces Charges for Allegedly Attaching Googly Eyes on ‘Blue Blob’ Artwork
A teenager from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after allegedly defacing a sizable art piece of a legendary being by applying plastic eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, aged 19, participated remotely at the local court in the state of South Australia on Tuesday, charged with one count of damaging property.
Officials commented at the moment of the recent event, the municipal authorities explained that surveillance video captured a person putting fake eyes on the sculpture, which locals have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”.
The accused did not enter a plea and informed the judge she was ill, as reported by media sources, with the magistrate recommending her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in the final month of the year.
A day after the reported event, the local mayor stated that restoration to the much-loved public artwork would be costly as the adhesive eyes could not be detached without harming the art piece.
“This wilful damage to a cherished community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in September. “It is not innocent amusement, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those members of our community who have embraced the Blue Blob.”
The mayor said the council would pursue the “significant” restoration expenses from those responsible for the damage.
When the sculpture was initially suggested, it received varied responses from the local community due to its cost and design.
Costing 136,000 Australian dollars ($89,000; £68,000), the sculpture represents a mythical megafauna, with the creators inspired by an prehistoric anteater-like marsupial discovered in nearby caverns that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
